My Study Plan

I have never studied in a foreign campus, but I’m always hearing from my friends, who have been abroad for further education, saying that you will get a wider vision, you will have more different thoughts, you will communicate with people all over the

world more skillfully. I really want to figure out whether these are true or not.

Besides, my major is economics. Fortunately, after searching a lot in your websites, I found many relative subjects. It’s universally considered that one country’s economy is closely associated with others. In order to have a better understanding of global economy, including operation mechanism, analyze models, development trend in the future, i want to catch this opportunities to share ideas with foreign students. Studying at your university is not only a honor but also a great challenge of

self-betterment. This would be the first time for me to schedule a elaborate study plan all by myself. I will spare no efforts to make full use of the resources and opportunities available.

My plan is as follows:

1. Curriculum

In terms of my abilities and interests as well as the basis of knowledge acquired, I plan to choose those courses:

---Principles of Economics (II)

This course will teach me basic economic knowledge and comprehend economic category, help me apply economic thinking to explain economic issues, equip me with essential business and management knowledge for work place.

---Money and Banking

The course provides a focus on the application of advanced economics and finance theory to commercial money markets and banking. I will obtain a range of

methodological skills and appropriate specialized knowledge relevant for money and banking.

---Culture and Economy

Culture and Economy pays attention to culture’s (art) production, currency, and consumption. With more and more cultural products coming into being, this field is worth studying.

---Introduction to Econometrics many mathematic courses, including advanced algebra, the theory of probability, mathematical analysis, and differential equations, I have the confidence to learn this course well.

---Economic Globalization

Economic globalization is the increasing economic interdependence of national goods, service, technology, and capital. As an exchange student, learning how to view the economic phenomenon globally is one of my aims.

---Behavioral Decision Making

least partially conflicting interests whose decisions affect each other. Game theory is one of my current classes, so I’m willing to study more about this.

Besides compulsory courses, I will choose some sports, arts and other interesting ones to learn.

2. Active Exchanges of Academic Views

Because of the lack of foreign experiences(I only have been to Japan), my analysis is severely limited, which means I couldn’t think from different perspectives.

Therefore, I feel a strong incentive to have direct contact and discussions with Taiwan scholars and students on academics. On one hand, I will know the differences in our education. On the other hand, I will try my best to understand their ways of thinking to view the mainland’s social circumstances.

The following ways may be effective to convey my thoughts to fellow students and communicate with my teachers:

---giving presentations and comments on classes

---attending seminars

---take part in teamwork

3. Research & Other Academic Programs

Having the ability to study issues is essential for college students, and I have

already acquired some knowledge of how to search for academic materials, how to write a standard paper, and how to handle the massive data. So, I plan to continue research program in Taiwan. Firstly, I will ask my classmates for some advice and

participate in their academic activities. At the same time , I would spare much time in the library to read relevant books. Attending lectures is also a great opportunity for me to find out my interested fields, and I will broaden my horizon. Then, I will

conduct some research mainly on my own. When I faced with difficulties, I will try my best to deal with them. If my professor are doing some projects, I am willing to provide my assistance to him if possible.

4. Colorful extracurricular activities

Academics are an important part for me, however, there is another more playful component of a well-rounded education -- outside the regular academic program. Besides being fun and a great way to socialize with peers, extracurricular activities can enhance time management and stress management skills, improving overall productivity. I really enjoy playing volleyball when I’m in BNU, and my friends and I will go to the playground almost every weekend. Participating in extracurricular activities will improve my academic and life skills, including discipline, goal-setting, teamwork, accountability and responsibility. Ultimately, the lessons I learn outside the classroom, in volleyball or chess club, can help me cope with future challenges in the workplace.

5. Building deep relationships

Because of some history, the communication between Taiwanese and the

mainland is not sufficient. I will know how they view our social situations, and more importantly, I could do my best to describe a more objective, real picture to them, to make them know better about us and reinforce our relation. I promise I will behave myself well to consolidate the cooperation between BNU and your university, between the Mainland and the Taiwan.

Personal statement

Cross-strait relation has long been a core topic of global affairs studies in

mainland China. My interests in this issue stems from the frequent engagements with Taiwanese merchants, who made a great contribution to the prosperity of my hometown city of Dongguan, when I was still a boy. I was deeply attracted by the unique social conditions and beautiful scenery of the island. Ever since high school I had been paying close attention to Taiwan’s development as well as her relation with mainland China; however I had never been to Taiwan due to obvious reasons. Now, the opportunity of exchange study at NCCU would not only satisfy my curiosity but also bring me a deeper understanding of cross-strait issues, an expansion of perspective and knowledge as well as a boost of my future career.

While a dramatic shift occurred from confrontation to cooperation in the year 2008, the prospect of cross-strait relation hangs on the perceptions of both

regions; mutual understanding and possible consensus must be built to maintain a positive and developing relation. Although I am greatly concerned about the issue, the merit of my analysis is severely limited due to the lack of knowledge and observation of a different perspective---from ‘the other side of the strait’. Therefore I feel a strong incentive to have direct contact and rational discussions with Taiwan scholars and students in order to gain an objective understanding of the ideas of Taiwanese citizens and politicians. In the mean time I could also do my best to convey opinions and judgments on mainland’s policies to my Taiwan counterparts. The NCCU as the center of social science studies in Taiwan has long been famous for its insightful study of Taiwan’s political, economic and social conditions. I firmly believe that an education at NCCU would pump fresh concepts and ideas which would be useful not only in my study of cross-strait problem but also on other international affairs.

Moreover, the possibility of reunification can be affected by the differences between the two regions of development levels, social cultures, mutual

perceptions and governance models as well as other external factors such as the foreign policy of USA and Japan. A multidisciplinary approach must be adopted involving the study of political development, geographical economics,

international laws, cultural studies and East Asian strategic conditions. Unfortunately many relevant courses are lacking in my current university; without adequate input I find it difficult to accurately predict the trends and impact of cross-strait circumstance. Meanwhile, the Department of Diplomacy at NCCU features distinguished faculty members and far more diversified

curriculums which could help solve many of my puzzles. The startling variety of
