How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose

your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds? Google engineers have discovered that

even 400 milliseconds—as short as the blink of an eye—is too long for most Internet

users. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small

time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times.

"Without question, nobody likes to wait," said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer, "Every

millisecond matters."

Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are continually gathering and

sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news

and restaurant suggestions, you can get digital "traffic jams". Meanwhile, users are

expecting faster and faster service.

Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, people will visit it less often. This is why technology companies are now competing

to be the fastest. Google said people do expect different things from different

websites because they realize not all loading times are the same.

For example, a person will be more patient waiting for a video to load than for a search

result.

Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too long to

load. This makes it difficult for video websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast loading times.

Trying to get a higher speed has always been part. of the history of the Internet.

In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very

crowded and slow; people called it the "World Wide Wait". But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables(光缆)

for sending in high-speed; they improved software so it would work more smoothly; they

placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased

speed.

Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Famous search engines such as Google and

Microsoft's Bing usually find search results in less than a second. However, in order

to meet the requirement of Internet users, these tycoons should never stop their steps.

26. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. The quality of pictures comes first for video websites.

B. Google is 250 milliseconds slower than other websites.

C. Microsoft's Bing is the fastest engine in the world now.

B. 400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users

C. a millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed D. a millisecond really makes a difference to Internet users 28. The engineers did something to improve the speed, including .

①CD making software work more smoothly

② laying a number of fiber optic cables inside

③ placing computer servers throughout the world

④ developing the quality of pictures on the Internet

A. ①②③ B. ②③④C. ①③④ D. ①②④

29. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Internet users are willing to see more search engines set up.

B. Google and Microsoft's Bing should help find the searching results.

C. These companies should mind their steps, or they will break down soon.

D. These companies need to catch up with the developing needs of internet users.

A 2-year-old boy is being described as a hero after using Face Time to save his mother after she was badly hurt.

According to a report from KGUN, Laura was trying to stop a fight between two dogs when one of the dogs bit part of her middle finger almost completely off. Laura tried to call 911 herself, but she said her hands were too badly hurt to make the call. “I asked my daughters to call 911, but they’re four, and they were quite afraid to even touch the phone, because it was covered in my blood.” Laura told KGUN.

The mother continued to lose a lot of blood and thought she would go into a deep sleep—until her 2-year-old son Bentley came up with a dishcloth from the kitchen. After cleaning some of the blood off his mother’s iPhone, Bentley continued to use Face Time to call Laura’s friend Connie.

“All I could see was his little forehead (前额). I said ‘Hi Bentley’ and it was quiet for a little while. Then I heard Laura shouting.” Connie told KGUN. Connie then called 911, and Bentley unlocked the door to let firefighters into the house.

It is important for us to keep the balance of nature.

Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks were taking many of their chicken. The farmers didn’t know what to do. Finally they went to the country officials and asked for help.

“Kill the hawks,” the officials said, “We will even pay for them,” so the farmers began to think of ways to kill the hawks.

The farmers killed many hawks. They no longer had to worry about their chickens. But they now had a new worry. Field mice were eating up a lot of the farmers’ grain. How did this happen?

Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers didn’t know this. When they killed a lot of hawks, they changed the balance.

When people move into a new place, they often destroy many wild plants. Often these plants are food for the animals. If the animals can’t find enough plants to eat, they will starve or have to leave the place.

In one part of the USA, for example the deer there like to eat a certain kind of wild roses. The mountain lions there eat the deer. The number of deer, mountain lions and wild roses doesn’t change much if people leave things as they are.

But people killed many mountain lions in order to protect the deer. Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the wild roses. Then the deer began to eat the green leaves of young trees. These trees were important to the farmers. So the farmers thought of ways to protect their trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died. This was another lesson from nature.

To keep the balance of nature is important for us to remember.

1. Finally the officials told the farmers to kill the hawks.

2. Field mice eat not only chickens but also the farmers’ grain.

3. When the animals can’t find enough plants to eat in a place, they will starve or have to leave.

4. The number of animals changes much if people leave things as they are.

5. It is important for us to keep the balance of nature.

1. 选T。根据句子 “Kill the hawks,” the officials said.

She was returning from teaching out in a small community . It was a moonless night, and a heavy snow was falling. She remembered back to when she had first started teaching out in small communities. In those days she had always picked up hitchhikers (搭便车者), until the day her sister told her of a friend who had been shot (中枪) in the head by a hitchhiker, all because she had stopped out of kindness to help him during a storm. Her family didn’t become concerned (关心的) about her safety over the

hitchhikers until the family heard the promise: “No more hitchhikers!” The snow that night was making her think back to this.

Then she saw a man waving. She slowed down for him, but now as he ran toward the car in the dark she shook with fear. Yet she thought that if he was truly in need she couldn’t leave him here in this storm.

The stranger explained that his car was dead, and she told him to get in. They drove for an hour into the next city and she took him to a telephone booth She waited until he had made a call. When he reported back to her that a

family member would soon come for him, she wished him well and left.

Tears fell on her cheeks as she drove away. She felt as though she had been holding her breath for an hour. “I hope they’ll understand why I had to break my promise,” she thought.

There are many wetlands(湿地) in China and some of them have become the

world‘s important wetlands. The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands are among them. They are in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. They are home for many different kinds of birds and animals. The world’s largest Milu Deer Nature Reserve(自然保护区) is in them. More than 700 milu deer live freely there. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world, but every winter you can see some in the Red-crowned Cranes Nature Reserve in the Yellow Sea Wetlands.

The temperature in the wetlands is usually neither too high nor too low. There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too. They are really good places for wildlife(野生生物)。 Offering food and home for some special kinds of animals and birds is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands. Wetlands are important because they also prevent flood. But some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means there will be less and less space for wildlife.

Luckily, more and more people are beginning to realize the important of wetlands and wildlife. Every year, on February 2nd, many activities are held to tell people more about wetlands.

B. Wetlands—Home for Wildlife and Human Beings

C. Special Animals in the Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands

D. Wetlands—Valuable Recourses(珍贵资源) of Land on the Earth 「答案与解析」

1. 选A. The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands are among them. They are in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province.

A.

The temperature in the wetland is usually neither too high nor too low. There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too.

They are home for many different kinds of birds and animals.(湿地是许多野生动物的家园);第2段又讲述了湿地Offering food and home for some special kinds of animals 以及Wetlands are important because they also prevent flood.
