Review of Animal farm

Review of “Animal Farm”

“Animal farm” tells a tragic satire that the oppressed farm animals rebelled to drive out Mr. Jones who was the farmer, and attempted to rule the farm by themselves on an equal basic. However, the animals` aim seems likely to be a sort of utopian communism, the venture failed and the farm was totally controlled by pigs which were the brightest and most idle animals.

This story is a vivid fable that just likes the human beings society. Every character has its antitype. When I read the novel, I felt so familiar with some plots in human `s history. It was interesting how Orwell used the animals to make a statement about politics and society.

I have heard that this novel is famous for its criticism against Soviet Communism. I`m not very familiar with Soviet history. But the animals all called themselves “comrade”, which impressed me very much. And the two leaders Napoleon and Snowball were two representative types of leader. Snowball was a tragic character. He was an active reformer who learned the skills of man including farming, reading, writing and architecture. With these skills, he taught other animals. He hoped every animal could learn more and improve themselves to be more knowledgeable and cultivated. As a leader, he was very responsible for other animals and the farm, and also competent, diligent for his work. Although sometimes his determination seems a little blind and unpractical, but he was really adventurous, just like a doer. However, he was too simple-minded and innocent in the power contest with Napoleon. Nevertheless, a leader demands general traits especially for his EQ level. Snowball was too innocent to defend himself against the sinister Napoleon. I wonder what will happen if Snowball have seen through Napoleon’s trap and is able to get the power. Will he gradually become corrupt and epicurean just like Napoleon? It seems that if Snowball is the leader, the farm will realize their equally happy aim. I don`t know whether he has the greed for power and luxury, but from this story I do realize that the communism is really hard and maybe impossible to achieve.

This novel can be seen as the analysis of the causes of the failure of communism, aiming to prove that human nature and diversity prevent people from being equal and happy ,or at least equally happy. Because in human world, the human nature and diversity decide that there must be someone are not only satisfied with meeting basal needs to exist, and the various people with different features and thoughts won`t make everyone simply equal in the civil rights and individual needs. I have never thought of the possibility of Communism before, but now I begin to suspect that according to the essential of human beings, it`s really a tough mission to achieve the Communism.

I know the story is seen as the satire for Soviet Communism, which made me associate with the Chinese Communism. For my poor political knowledge, I know we are in the Socialism phase, primary for the Communism. Our final target is to realize the Communism and I do wonder when this primary phase is an ending in the future? We are responded unclearly that it will be a very long and tough period in the development process of our country, maybe more than

hundreds years. But how about the later generations? As a matter of fact, I suspect that nobody knows what this primary Socialism will be in the future, it seems that the nation just maintains the actuality and no one cares the direction of Socialism. Even if someone have thought of it, they are not able to consider it clearly. Not everyone can be the giant.

And I also found it different between Soviet and China. In “Animal Farm”, The pigs turned the simple “comrades” to ruthless dictators who managed to walk on legs and carry whips. This kind of totalitarianism ended up with failure, how about Chinese Communism? Totalitarianism and tyranny seems not easy to carry out in China and the phenomenon of “the leader is always right” maybe will never appear again since the institutional revolution have taken place. We select the same way of Communism from Soviet, and what we should do for the next step is a serious social and national problem.

Like a number of girls, i`m not very interested in the politics, but this book made me begin to think of it. Although I`m not able to think clearly and systemically, I have gained a lot from the reading and thinking process.

Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four combine historical truth with the fable and fiction novels, which show the art of political novels, to make readers feel surprised. With reasonable views, the two novels may not use normal narration to turn the familiar historical events into strange ones, and to change the usual events into strange ones to realize the specialties of language expression. The popular names which are known by readers have not been adopted on purpose in the two novels. There are some understanding barriers in language to make readers spend much more prolonged time in reading. With the style of irony and anger, the novels have demonstrated the comedy style out of tragedy implication to increase the symbolic and intentional effectiveness. With strange views, the irony has been applied to express the peculiar anguish

outstanding novel, Animal Farm, of which many critics have diverse opinions , is undoubtedly one of the most popular novels for the past half century. Even the famous historian, Timothy Garton Ash, a fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford University, once confirmed in public that his writings had been deeply influenced by George Orwell, and regarded Orwell’s book as political writings as well as great works of art. In the spring of 1946, when Animal Farm was firstly published in United States, it had already been translated into nine languages. During the next three years since its publication, this novel had been sold out almost half a million copies worldwide. It is impossible to

overstate the significant role and popularity of Animal Farm in the history of English literature. As far as the present author is concerned, George Orwell’s admirable use of irony in Animal Farm deserves to be studied in detail, so as to shed some light on why this book has such a world-wide appeal over the past sixty years. As a figure of speech in drama and literature, irony is a statement or action whose apparent meaning is underlain by an opposite meaning. It is traditionally categorized into three aspects: verbal; dramatic; situational. In most cases, the uses of irony in Animal Farm belong to the first two. By using the ironic technique, George Orwell is a wonder of the novelists and contributes a lot to the literary world.

Conclusion

Animal Farm lasts its worldwide popularity for nearly sixty years.

With the end of the struggles against fascism and the victory in 1945, a new conflict between the West and the East began to develop―—the cold war. It is unfortunate Animal Farm started to be taken as an instrument of propaganda of the West campaign. With the assistance of the United States government, it became more popular.

Should it be read during the next fifty years?

Is Animal Farm out of date since the United Soviet Socialist Republics have collapsed and the cold war was end?

The present author holds it firmly that it would not be. This tale about

independence and equality won but lost, exposing the evil dictatorship,

continues to remind us that freedom is fragile and precious. This fictitious ideal animal world, created by Orwell, would for all the time warns that the

dispiteous and inhumane struggles of powers in the human world, and the fearful reality that when power corrupts, there are always other forces at work seeking to wield it.

Despite its politic implications about power switches and dispassionate

criticism of the human society, this novel is still a great work. Animal Farm is an allegorical fable, depicting the abuses of power among a group of farm animals who rebel against their human owners and attempt to form an

egalitarian society. As an extremely disciplined writer, Orwell consistently uses language to enhance the development of plot while providing insight into thematic concerns. Written in a pure, subtle, and simplistic style, Animal Farm evokes descriptive imagery and stunning clarity of purpose. Although the novel begins with a relatively light tone, it gradually evolves into a menacing and debilitating void. Coming full circle, the novel ends with a tremendous sense of futility and loss as even the memory of the revolution fades into quiet and passive oblivion. The writing style of Animal Farm is mostly determined by the tense social environment Orwell was in. Moreover, duo to his attempts of combining political purposes of reprehending the social inequality and arts purpose of creating a great work, Orwell makes full use of verbal irony and dramatic irony to clarify his viewpoints .What’s more, the vital success of this novel lies in the profoundly and skillful use of verbal ironies and dramatic ironies in a gentle, dispassionate and logic way.

In a word, Orwell is the first person to make full use of the human-animal relationship for political or social commentary. His distinguished uses of irony make Animal Farm become one of the masterpieces with worldwide appeal for the past sixty decades. Furthermore, it still should be readed with pleasure and profit for the next fifty years, inside and outside the classroom, as a deep impulse for people of the present age to rethink equality and ponder over the latent problems of our own society

Fight For We(为自己而战) 周珈羽 Animal Farm tells a story about farm animals. They are fed up with Mr. Jones, the farmer who treats them badly, so they decide to kick him off the farm and run the farm themselves. They adopt Seven Commandments of Animalism, of which the most important is "All animals are equal”. Pigs are the leaders of the operation of the newly start-up farm. Thanks to the right lead of the pigs and selfless and hardworking of all animals, the Animal Farm develops good enough to their demands. However, life is not easy. The leaders separate into two factions soon after. As a result, Snowball, a pig leader, is expelled by Napoleon, another pig, as a betrayer. Although Snowball was a brave leader, others firmly conceive he wasn’t and Snowball is a bad animal indeed after brainwashing Napoleon offered. What’s more, the Seven Commandments of Animalism had also been changed. Finally, the Animal Farm becomes quite different from what they hope it to be at the beginning. From the novel, it is the faith that support animals to find their regime and struggle the equal from humans. But it’s the ambition that leads to the animal farm’s tragedy and destroy the hope of democracy.

Upon finishing the book, I can’t help thinking the animal farm is similar to our society. Nowadays, it’s the conviction that we are all created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But the progress has been uneven. there was a time when we wonder who’s the ruler of the world, all of us had the ambition to control the whole world, then wars broke out. It robbed many innocent lives as well as the peace and the harmony, which evoke our deeper thoughts, is it the home we want to rebuild? Is it the faith that we believe in? Knowing what stupid things we’ve done, we stopped the crimes and got our foot in the door of democracy. Of course the work of democracy has always been hard,

contentious and sometimes bloody. We still have to fight for it, with the faith, no matter when we are, no matter who we are.

book report of animal farmanimal farm is the first book i choose to read among the list of bbc top 100 novels.

the book has aroused strong reaction and became famous since the date it was published.

it reveals human reality by telling animals’ story in funny but extremely ironic

way. it seems ridiculous for animals to have a revolution and for pigs to govern the

farm. but when we put it into human’s society, the story makes sense. in fact it

reflects on the revolution happened in soviet in 20th century. animalism is similar

to socialism, which emphasizes equality a lot, but actually inequality at all. extreme

equality is tend to get into an embarrassing situation like “all animals are equal,

but some animals are more equal than others.”napoleon is also the reflection of soviet’

s leader si dalin, who was famous for his arbitrariness and toughness in the history

and expelled trotsky (snowball reflects on trotsky). the revolution of animals is based on being treated unfairly by human. because

their enthusiasm and hatred, they success at the beginning. however, they do not know

how to remain a steady regime. the key of keeping a regime is to set restrictions

to the power. in other words, to legislate. the responsibility and rights of both

government and citizens should be showed obviously in the law.to make a conclusion, george orwell makes the reveal of politics and humanity

in a vivid and simple story, from which readers think much about the history and

society.

the conflicts in animal farmanimal farm mainly narrates a story which is focus on the rebellion brought about

by animals, the management in the farm when it is in charged of two pigs, napoleon

and snowball, and the different opinions of two leaders to control and govern the

whole farm.

1.whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.

2. whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.

3. no animal shall wear clothes.

4. no animal shall sleep in a bed.

5. no animals shall drink alcohol.

6. no animal shall kill any other animal.

7. all animals are equal.four legs good, two legs better. no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.no animal shall drink alcohol to excess.no animal shall kill any other animal without cause.all animals are equal / but some animals are more equal than others. finally, the farm is called manor farm again.and pigs govern the farm just like

the human-being before.according to the plot of this novel, three conflicts could be deduced. in the

first place, the conflict primarily concentrates on the unsatisfactory of animals

towards thecitizens than before, which is easy to result in the consequences of inequality

and unfair phenomenon. these three conflicts are able to offer us several reflections in our real life.

first of all, the government has a moral obligation and responsibility to cope with

the relationship with people, which could be deduced from the connections between

mr jones and the animals. simply because of the improper way to solve the relationship,

mr jones is kicked out from his own farm, which is able to infer the relations between

the authority and the people who are governed by this bureau. moreover, corruption

could only be avoided under the regulations. even if the original thought was the

same to maintain the equality in the farm, with the increase of wild ambition and

desire to control, the corruption and unfair situation appears in the farm ultimately.

furthermore, in order to control the abuse of rights and power, the authority and

government have to take some measures to make it under control, which is significant

in the society and is the only way to offer the citizens pleasant and joyful life.in conclusion, there exist three different conflicts between human race and

animals, from which we could deduce three troubles waited to be solved. and as far

as i am concerned, the assignment of the power is one of the main sources to give

rise to all of these conflicts and consequences which result in the dispossession

of a better life. hence, in order to own an equal and justify life, the abuse of rights

has to be resolves and under control, which is the only way leading to the happy

existences for humanbeings.
