篇二：英文中的称呼问题
英文中的称呼问题
英语国家人们相互间的称呼，和我国的习惯相差很大，值得我们研究一下，以免在交往接触中使用不当。
对于几个或更多的成年男子，可尊称他们为gentlemen，意为“先生们”。对于一位不知名的男子，可称为gentleman或sir,但不宜单独用 mister这个字称呼他，因为这是小孩子或较低微的人的口吻。对于已知其姓氏的男子，可在他的姓(family name)前冠以Mr.，如Mr．Smith，但不要在他的名前冠以Mr．，如Mr．Jack。Mr．为Mister的略语，也读为／'misto／。用 在姓前时，不要全部拼写出来。比如说Gregory Wood和Milo Weaver两个人．在初认识时可互称Mr．Weaver和Mr．Wood，在比较熟识后，可互称对方的名(first name)，即Gregory(或Greg)和Milo．
按英语国家的习惯，妇女结婚后都使用丈夫的姓。一个已婚妇女的全名是以自己的first name加上丈夫的family name。比如说Jane Brown与Greg Wood结婚后，她便称为Jane Wood，而Jane Brown便成为她“未嫁时的名字”(maiden name)，而很少使用。她在未嫁时被称为Miss Brown，嫁后便被称为
Mrs．Wood。 Mrs．读为／'misiz／，由来于mistress，但后者现有别的意思．不再当“夫人，太太”讲了。Mrs．从不脱离姓名单独使用；问别人的夫人 好，说How is the miss is?是故作诙谐、不登大雅的。对于熟悉的人. Jane Brown不论婚前婚后都只称Jane就可以了。Jane和Greg在一起可称为the Woods，意为”伍德两口子”。由于妇女结婚后有改随夫姓的问题，故当一个女子说：“I would rather not change my name now．”她的意思是还不想结婚。一般情况下，夫妻互相以名字相称；互称darling、dear、dearie的也不少．还有夫称妻为honey或 sweet heart的。在对第三者谈自己的丈夫或妻子时．视和第三者熟悉的程度，可以说Mr．Wood、(Mrs．Wood)、My husband(My wife)或Greg(Jane)；前两种说法比较正式，用于较不熟悉的人。我们的“孩子他妈”、“小康他爸爸”这类说法在英语中是没有的，但某些地区 (如美国某些地方)老年夫妻“跟着孩子称呼”．互相中叫Mom、Pop。此外．在某些阶层中称自己丈夫为my old man，称自己妻子为my old woman，也是有的。如果妻子对丈夫忽然严肃地叫Mr．Wood，或甚至说My dear Mr．Wood，这就说明她生气了，或者她要认真地谈清什么问题．气氛就比较紧张了。
父母常以爱称来叫自己的孩子，亲友互相称呼其孩子时也一样．这有如我国孩子的小名，但这种爱称是有规律的。如John—Johnny— Jack，William—Will—Bill，Robert—Bob，Ronald—Ron，
Reginald——Reggie——Reg，Simon ——Sim，Samuel——Sam，
Margaret——Mag，Patricia——Pat，Judith——Judy，Elizabeth—— Lizzy—Liz等等。美国前总统John Kennedy习称Jack，总统James Carter自己署名Jimmy Carter，均属此。我国称别人的孩子为“小弟弟．小妹妹”，英语中无此习惯。孩子很小时，称父母为Daddy、Mummy，到稍大，改为Dad和
Mum(Mom)．再大时，也有改口叫Father、Mother的。过去有用Papa、Mama的，现在较少了。
同 辈孩子间一般是互相直呼其名．并用爱称，不像我国，弟妹不能称兄姐之名，或互相在名下缀以“哥、姐、弟、妹”之类，更没有用号码来代替人名的。英语中的 big brother只有“哥哥”的意思，不是说排行第一。把三哥、四嫂直译为third elder brother、fourth sister-in－law之类，即使是故意渲染本地风光、增加色彩，也并不可取。
孩 子称呼别的孩子的父母．一般客气地称为Mr．Wood、Mrs．Wood等等。如很熟悉时，可学自己父母的样称呼Jane、Greg，尤其是孩子已长大而 叔叔阿姨还不显得老时，更是如此。两家关系极密切，交往年代又较长远时，称Uncle Greg、Aunt Jane的可能性也存在。但对于长辈人通称为叔叔阿姨，不是英语国家的习惯。什么Uncle Policeman、Aunt Conductor，更是“莫名其妙”了。
美国有个习惯，就是年纪稍大的男子称年轻的男子为son，以表示亲切。这常见于长辈与晚辈，职务上高一级与低一级者(如军队里、铁路上等)，以及老手与新手之间。有时不免有点“倚老卖老”的味道，但决无骂人之意，因为在英语国家．并不以当人家老子为占便宜。
最后，我国那种“王工程师”、“李书记”、“刘老师”的说法，不能直译成英语。只有医生以及有军衔的人，可以说Doctor Thurber，Colonel Bates等。此外，President Ford、Senator Wagner、Mayor Phillips、Professor Hood等，也常有这样说的，以示尊敬。
例如我们有一位美国教师，名叫William Atkins，不太熟悉时叫他
Mr．Atkins，熟悉后叫他William或甚至于Bill。千万不要叫他Atkins，那是至少半个世纪以前英美富豪 对待男仆的称谓。至于我们中国人，学生可以称老师为Comrade Wang、Comrade Liu等。老师对学生，在大学可以称Comrade?，在小学则可直呼其名

例：局长: director of the bureau, head of the bureau, bureau chief. 国 务院 the State Council 属下的部为ministry，所以部长叫做minister. 另外，公署专员叫做commissioner，其办事机构叫做 “专员公署”，英语为prefectural commissioner’s office.
汉语中表示副职的头衔一般都冠以“副” 字，英译时需视词语的固定搭配或表达习惯等情况，可选择vice associate assistant deputy等词。相对而言，vice使用面较广，例如：
副总统（或大学副校长等） vice president
副主席（或系副主任等） vice chairman
副总理 vice premier
副部长 vice minister
副省长 vice governor

副校长（中小学） vice principal
行政职务的副职头衔与学术头衔的“副”职称往往用不同的词表达，最为常用的英语词是associate，例如：
