One day, the lion king announced that he was going to get married, and he invited all the animals to attend the wedding ceremony. So the tortoise thought, “I am an animal. I shall attend it as well.” Then he set out on the journey.
On his way, he met other animals. They were stunned for a few seconds and then began to laugh at the tortoise, saying, “How silly you are! The ceremony is starting. Can you make it as you walk so lowly? I’m afraid you still can’t be there after the baby lion king is born, or grow up or even after he gets married.” But the tortoise had made his mind to go.
Many years passed, and he finally got to the entrance of the lion king’s cave. No wonder that the lion king’s wedding had already been finished a long time ago. However, the tortoise found that the cave was so well- decorated and all varieties of animals were there. They told the tortoise, “Today, the son of the old lion king is going to get married.”
How could the tortoise attend the little lion king’s wedding party if he had stopped half- way?

After a heavy rain, a spider was climbing hard towards his broken net on the wall. Because the wall was too wet, the spider fell down after reaching a certain height. But he continuously climbed up and fell down again and again.
The first man saw it, sighed heavily and said to himself, “My life is just like that spider’s; busy all the time but getting nothing?” He became increasingly depressed.
The second man saw it and said, “What a stupid spider. Why doesn’t it make a detour to a drier place? I’d never be that stupid.” So he became smarter.
The third man saw it. He was quite moved by the spider’s perseverance and said to himself, “I won’t let a little spider be stronger and more persistent than me. I’ll learn from his example and become stronger,” and he did.

There was a young flower in the desert where all was dry and sad looking. It was growing by itself, enjoying every day and saying to the sun, “When shall I be grown up?” And the sun would say, “Be patient! Each time I touch you, and you will grow a little.” She was so pleased because she would have a chance to bring beauty to this corner of sand. And this is all she wanted to do ---- bring a little bit of beauty to this world.
But one day a hunter came by and stepped on the flower. She was going to
die and she felt so sad. Not because she was dying, but because she would never have a chance to bring a little bit of beauty to this corner of the desert.
The Great Spirit saw her, thinking that she should be living. So he reached down and touched her---- and gave her a second life.
Finally she grew up to be a beautiful flower. And this corner of the desert also became so beautiful because of the small flower.

Soon after her little brother was born, Sachi began to ask her parents to leave her alone with the new baby. They worried that like most four-year-olds, she might feel jealous and want to hurt (hit or shake) him, so they said no. But she tried every effort to show she wouldn’t hurt him. (But they found her have no sign of jealousy.) She treated the baby with kindness, and her pleas to be left alone with him became more urgent. After a long time of observation, her parents finally allowed it.
Elated, she went into the baby’s room and shut the door, but it opened a crack---- enough for her curious parents to peek in and listen. They saw little Sachi walk quietly up to her baby brother, put her face close to his and say quietly, “Baby, tell me what God feels like. I’m starting to forget.”

There are three brothers who all have doctor degrees and work for NASA. One day after finishing dinner in their mother’s home, again they started discussing the project of landing on the moon and establishing the space station.
One of the daughters-in-law washing dishes in the kitchen complained, “They three discuss those unimaginable things all the time, which makes us foolish compared with them.”
But the mother said, “I used to think that I was foolish. However, I changed my mind remembering that they three spent the whole afternoon fixing all the screen windows around the house last autumn.”

A customer having lunch in a restaurant asked a waiter, “What will be the weather like tomorrow?”
The waiter answered full of certainty, “It will be the weather I like.”
Puzzled, the customer asked, “How can you know it will be the weather you like?”
The waiter said, “I find that the surroundings can not always go with my mind. So I learn to face everything that I encounter joyfully. Then the weather tomorrow must be the one that I enjoy.”

Three years later, the first man rushing out of the prison was the American, with his nostrils full of cigars, shouting, “Give me fire! Give me fire!” He turned out to forget to ask for fire.
Then there came the Frenchman. He was seen to hold a child in his arms. The beautiful lady was followed by one child, too, perceiving the third one.
The last coming one was the Jewish. He held the warden’s hand tightly and said, “Thanks to the telephone. I have been keeping contact with the outside society these three years. My business didn’t stop, but has increased by 200%. So I’ll send you a Rolls-Royce as a gift to show my thankfulness.”
(8) The Fox and the Crow
One day a crow stood on a branch near his nest and felt very happy with the meat in his mouth. At that time, a fox saw the crow with the meat, so he swallowed and eagerly thought of a plan to get the meat. However, whatever the fox said to the crow, the crow just kept silent. Until the fox thought highly of the crow’s beautiful voice, the crow felt flattered and opened his mouth to sing. As soon as the meat fell down to the ground, the fox took the meat and went into his hole.

There was a little mouse staying at home all day. It dared not to go out, even at night. “The cat is such a terrible animal. He’ll eat me.” it always said, with a shudder of horror.
God sympathized with the little mouse very much, so he turned it into a cat. But the cat which was previously a mouse turned out to be afraid of dogs. “Dogs always appear fiendish. What can I do if I happen to encounter him?” So God turned it into a dog. But it then began to be scared of tigers. And trying his best, God turned it into a tiger.
To his surprise, again the tiger said with its legs shaking, “The hunter’s gun can kill me at any time.”
At last, God was so angry that he turned it back to a mouse. He said, “You’re
a mouse after all. Even if I turned you into a hunter, you would be in fear of mice. I can not help you because you only have a mouse’s gut.”
(10) Suffering Is a Part of Life

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that it is very important to accept the bad with the good, the light with the dark and the pain with the joy. I have learned that without pain I wouldn’t know joy. I have learned that because of things like illness and death it is that much more important to love and live life to the fullest. Great lessons are learned from terrible tragedies, tremendous growth takes place when we are pushed to our very limits, and although I don’t necessarily like the “tough stuff” I am learning to live with it.

Every one has his own advantages. But these advantages are not implicit. Sometimes they may turn to disadvantages.

A college graduate was new in job and he found something really strange. One of his colleagues was a chair warmer. Most of the time, he would play his digital camera, receive and send his private e-mails or listen to the music. And more strangely, the boss never blamed him.

A man from the state of Chu was taking a boat across a river when he dropped his sword into the water carelessly. Immediately he made a mark on the side of the boat where the sword dropped, hoping to find it later. When the boat stopped moving, he went into the water to search for his sword at the place where he had marked the boat. As we know, the boat had moved but the sword had not. On a vacation trip, Duke Huan of the state of Qi came to the ruin of the capital of Guo Shi , which perished long ago.
Seeing the desolate and bleak prospects of broken tiles, collapsed walls, and clusters of weeds, he could not help asking the local people about the reason of the ruin of Guo Shi.
They replied,"Guo Shi was fond of doing good deeds, and averse to evildoing, which led to the perdition."
When the Duke could not understand the answer, people explained ," Though he liked doing good, he had never been able to do so; though he hated evildoing, never could he help not participating. That caused the ruin of his capital."

A mouse once took a bite out of a bull's tail as he lay dozing. The bull jumped up in a rage and, with his head low to the ground, chased the mouse right across the yard. The mouse was too quick for him, however, and slipped easily into a hole in the wall.The bull charged the wall furiously again and again, but although he bruised his head and chipped his horns, the mouse stayed safely inside his hole. After a time the bull gave up and sank down to rest again.
As soon as the bull was asleep, the little mouse crept to the mouth of the hole, pattered across the yard, bit the bull again -- this time on the nose -- and rushed back to safety. As the bull roared helplessly the mouse squeaked:

几个英语误用的小故事
世界是个万花筒，语言是个魔术师，正是语言这个最高明的魔术师把天地间的万般事物描绘得惟妙惟肖，淋漓尽致。连珠的妙语给人美的享受，精辟的格言给人智慧的启迪，诙谐幽默的语言更会增添生活的多姿多彩。一个字(词)的换用或误解就会导致全句，甚至全文的歧意。 现编辑几则轶事趣闻，但愿能给读者一点新意扑面，“趣”在其中之感。
（一）
英国的贵族富斯特(Foster)在美国旅行时，正赶上美国的社交季节。一次，他应邀参加一个较为重要的晚会，会上遇见了一位美丽、漂亮、活泼、可爱的小姐，他忍不住要献点殷勤，说点称赞的话。于是他就用了一句很漂亮的英国话对她说：“You are looking very fresh !”这句话的意思是：“你看起来真是朝气蓬勃！”可是富斯特没有想到，他的马屁竟然拍到马腿上了。那位小姐一听，大为生气，竟至拂袖而去，不再理会这位很有身份的贵族了。原因何在？原来fresh一字，到了美国之后，受到德国移民所说的德国话的影响而产生出英文原来没有的新意思。“fresh”的新意思是：“厚颜的，卤莽的，无理的”。在当时，fresh一词的意思完全是美国俚语，竟然具有“下流而狎昵”的意思。富斯特对一个少女说这样的话，她怎么能不生气呢？

奚落受尽在一“点”
英国一位很有身份的绅士，他对社会上出现的新式服装非常反感，为了表明自己的立场，他在报纸上登了一则启示“I will wear no clothes which will distingush me from my fellow-
men”．这句话的意思是：“任何使我显得与众不同的衣服我都不愿意穿”。但不知怎么回事，当这则启示在报纸上登出来的时候，却成了：“I will wear no clothes ,which will distinguish me from my fellow- men.”。莫名其妙地多了一个逗号。这样一来，这个句子就成了非限定性定语从句，其意思是：“我什么衣服都不愿意穿，这样我就显得与众不同了”。什么衣服都不穿，的确与众不同。这个保守的绅士被人好一阵奚落。

错用一词一条命
一位到英国旅游的法国绅士正在湖边散步，一不小心，他掉进了湖中，他一边拼命挣扎着一
边高喊“Help！”“救命！”。一位也在附近散步的英国绅士听到之后，走了过来，慢吞吞地脱掉衣服，正欲跳到水中救人。可能由于被水淹昏了头或者英语学得太差，法国人大喊：“I will be drowned and no one shall save me !”
听到这句话之后，英国绅士竟然重新穿上衣服，拂袖而去。法国人沉入湖底，命丧黄泉。 他丧命的原因就在于他说错了话，用错了词。他的本意是：“我要淹死了，怎么没有人来救我？”。可是，他将shall和will给用颠倒了，这样这句话的意思就成了：“我愿意淹死，谁也不准来救我”。英语中，如果shall用在第二、三人称，具有强烈命令的意思。 （四）
1962年英国和美国召开高级裁军会议，英方代表提出 table a motion(讨论提案），而美方代表却竭力反对。争论许久，最后美方代表说："But it's a very good motion .Why do you want to table it ?''（“但这是一个很好的提案，你们为什么要将它搁置？”），英方代表这才恍然大悟，原来他们的双方观点是一致的，都是要讨论这个提案。引起这场麻烦的是table这个单词。table有两个意思，即英国英语“讨论”和美国英语“不讨论”。

名人名错
英国大文豪查里斯·狄更斯功成名就之后应邀到美国访问讲学，他演讲了一场又一场，受到了热烈欢迎。有一天，他来到美国名城纽约，演讲时，全场观众非常热情，气氛十分热烈。狄更斯很受感动，于是他就大声对所有的观众说了一声：“Today I can see many homely faces here”话音未落，听众脸上顿生愠色，很多人愤然离席而去。怎么回事呢？原来问题出在“homely”一词，狄更斯的本意是：“今天我看到了许多诚挚真情的面孔”。但他忽视了英国英语和美国英语的差异。“homely”一词在英国英语中的意思是：“热情友好的、诚恳真挚的”，但在美国英语中的意思却是：“形秽貌陋的、”。

“祸”起哪端？
一位英国老太太在一家邮局买了一张邮票，她想让营业员帮她给贴到信封上，所以她就问了一句：“Will you help me to stick this stamp on?”：“您可以帮我贴上这张邮票吗？”。营业员正忙着，于是就说了一句：“You must stick it on yourself！”可是没有想到的是老太太十分恼火，大吵大闹了起来。一怒之下，她竟然找老板告状，这位英语没有说好的营业员差点因此而丢
了饭碗。怎么了？
营业员的意思很明显就是让老太太自己贴上。可是由于这个营业员的英语说得不标准，他把on 当作介词来念了，将它弱读了，并紧接着就把yourself给说了下去，又在it 和on之间稍加停顿。结果就成了：“你得把邮票贴到自己身上”。
（七）
一个冠词，一顿打
一个英国人到美国朋友家去做客，可是朋友不在家。朋友的太太热情友好地接待了他，他非常感激。朋友太太送他走到大门口时，他真诚地对她说了一句：“Thank you for
entertaining me in the family way.”听到这句话，朋友的太太抄起一根棍子将这位英国人打了出去。原来，这个英国人将句字之中的冠词给用错了。“in a family way”是“一家人”的意思；而“in the family way”是“怀孕”的意思。试想，他能不挨打吗？。

Where ？Where？是何意？
第二次世界大战期间，美国总统罗斯富和当时中国总统蒋介石会面。罗斯富总统看到蒋夫人风度翩翩、气度非凡、美丽漂亮，就禁不住称赞了一句：“Your wife is very beautiful ！”。翻译立即翻译了过来：“贵夫人非常漂亮！”。蒋介石一听立即答到：“哪里！哪里！”这本是中国客套话，按英语习惯应该直接翻译成：“Thank you”即可。但随从翻译不知为什么竟翻译成了：“Where ？Where？”罗斯富总统听后心想：“我称赞你夫人漂亮，你问我哪里漂亮？”。于是他就回答了一句：“Everywhere！， Everywhere！”。如此岂不成了“到处都漂亮”了吗？
（九）
“字眼”选用须谨慎
一家濒临破产而又起死回生的企业为庆贺中外合资的成功，郑重其事地请来了上级领导，各界朋友，更请来了外资人员，奉若上宾。当公司“老总”发言说到：“我们的企业在几年前还是默默无闻的”时，一位翻译随即译成了：“Several years ago our company was quite
infamous.”。在场的外宾无不愕然，另一位翻译当即进行了更正：“Several years ago our company was quite unknown to the public.”话音刚落，哄堂大笑。原来，infamous 一词并不是
famous（出名的，著名的）的反意词，它的意思是“臭名昭著的、声名狼藉的、恶名昭彰的”。 （十）

大清重臣李鸿章出使德国，他应俾斯麦之邀前往赴宴。主、宾入席吃完水果之后，每人面前又都上了一大碗清水。俾斯麦很有礼貌地说了一声：“Help yourself.请用”，李鸿章听到：“喝了吧！”（help一词的读音），心中暗想：“偏偶小国、蛮夷之邦、不懂教化，刚才水果好吃，我已经吃了不少了，怎么又要让我再喝一大碗清水呢？但我堂堂大国一等大臣岂能让你小国小瞧了！”。所以他就把面前的那碗吃水果之后洗手用的水端起来一气喝了。当时，俾斯麦不了解中国虚实，为了不使李鸿章丢丑，他也将洗手水一饮而尽，见此情形，在座的其他文武百官只得忍笑奉陪。这到底是这位大清重臣英语没有学好呢？还是他出国考察之前学的那点西方礼节习俗不够用呢？
