英语试卷 笔试部分

第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳答案,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Tonight’s “Tech Live” tells the story of Gigabyte, a young kickboxer and virus writer. She can kick you in the pants and wipe your hard drive cleaner than a dog’s dinner plate.

“I’ll just shoot you from behind,” I say, carrying my TV camera. It’s almost time for the 6:00 p.m. kickboxing class, and Gigabyte is the only woman learner there. She’s also something of a virus-writing genius, having started programming at age six. “I figured out how to write a few lines of code on my uncle’s Commodore 64,” says Gigabyte, who has just recently celebrated her 18th birthday. At age fourteen, she wrote her first computer worm, which took over the shutdown screens of infected users. Two years later, she wrote another powerful virus that damages MP3 files. And recently she has become the second person to write a virus in C# (pronounced “C sharp”). Her so-called “Sharpei” worm, which comes in an email attachment, infects certain files in computers.

“Virus writing is so aggressive, and most reasonable people consider it an act of vandalism(蓄意破坏), or at least potential vandalism,” I say. “That’s not my problem. The users are running the virus. They are the ones clicking on it,” she says.

“So you really think the people who execute(运行) these programs are responsible for the damage that your viruses do?” I ask. “Actually,” she says, “I think many people should have to have some sort of license to get on the Internet.” Gigabyte is quick to remind visitors that she never releases her viruses into the wild. Instead, she sends them to antivirus companies, hoping for the kind of affirmation(确认) that only comes with “high-risk”. But she also has posted her viruses on her homepage, meaning anyone else could release them. “That’s not my problem,” she says. “When people make guns, can you blame them when somebody kills somebody else with the guns? I only write them; I don’t release them. I do want to work with computers for a living, but not with an antivirus company.”

21. How old was Gigabyte when she wrote her first computer virus?

A. 6.B. 14. C. 16. D. 18.

22. How does Gigabyte’s Sharpei worm spread from one computer to another?

A. It comes in an email attachment.B. It takes over the shutdown screens.

C. It spreads via MP3 files. D. It wipes hard drive cleaner.

23. What is the author’s attitude to virus writing?

A. Supportive. B. Negative.C. Defensive.D. Positive.

24. Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?

A. Gigabyte is taking kickboxing classes.

B. Gigabyte doesn’t think she is to blame for spreading the virus.

C. Gigabyte thinks not everyone can use the Internet appropriately.

D. Gigabyte works for antivirus companies secretly.

Scientists say new man-made materials equipped with sensors could turn bandages into a valuable tool for health care workers.

Simple bandages are easy to use, covering up the damaged skin and giving it time to heal. Scientists are now developing bandages with technology currently used in popular wearable devices, such as smart watches and fitness trackers. They have begun adding small sensors of all kinds to bandages and making them more sensitive. Scientists are also making new materials called hydrogels(水凝胶). Hydrogels resemble human skin. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found a way to combine these two technologies. They created a stretchy polymer(聚合物)with firmness similar to human soft tissue. The new combination product has titanium wires that lie in a zig-zag, or “z”-shaped design. The wires, connected to electronic sensors, stretch easily without breaking contact with the sensors.

Xuanhe Zhao, an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering, says the researchers put electronic devices, such as sensors, into the new material. They use a different device to put medicine in the damaged skin. The resulting product becomes a kind of “smart-wound dressing” --- one that can react to changes in the skin around it.

For example, Zhao says, if there is a sudden increase in temperature, the wound will send out a command. That is when “the controlled drug delivery system can deliver a specific drug to that specific location.” LED lights in the bandage can warn patients and doctors about changes in different areas. Medication quickly spreads across the bandage, through tiny passageways so that the wound heals quickly. Zhao tells us that he and his team are working hard and hope to get to clinical tests soon. It will be some time before these smart bandages reach hospitals or drug stores. But Zhao says “I firmly believe that eventually will have a broad application.” In the future, such products might even contain a computer chip, which would give them more power to analyze what is needed.

25. According to the passage, titanium wires _____________.

A. are “z” shaped and similar to human skin

B. stretch easily so that they break contact with electronic sensors

C. lie in the new combination product ,a polymer

D. are connected to electric sensors and sensitive to temperature

26. What do we know about smart bandages according to the passage?

A. They have been applied to patients in most clinics.

B. They can react to changes in the skin around.

C. They will deliver drugs to the wound before it sends out a command.

D. They can warn doctors of drug changes through LED lights.

27. What does the underlined “they” refer to in the last paragraph?

A. Smart bandages.B. Clinical tests. C. Drug stores. D. Computer chips.

28. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Bandages and Electronic Sensors

B. Smart Bandages and Electronic Devices

C. Smart Bandages to Heal Wounds More Quickly

D. A New Way to Develop Electronic Sensors for Bandages

Sleeping in Class

I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few minutes nap time before class couldn’t hurt, I thought.

BOOM! My head jerked up and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous, boyish grin on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of textbook he was carrying onto his desk. “Good morning!”,he said, still smiling. “I am glad to see everyone is awake. Now let’s get started.”

For the next hour I wasn’t sleep at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’s textbook alarm clock either. It was instead from the fascinating discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor he made the material come alive. His insights were full of both wisdom and loving-kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy that he tanght with were contagious(有感染力的).I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.

I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world be if all of us did our work joyously and well. What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, preacher, cook, mechanic, waitress, businessman, fisherman, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love. Don’t sleepwalk your way through life then. Wake up ! Let your love fill your work and love fill your soul. Life is too short not to live it well.

D.The student left the two-hour period not only wide awake, but a little smarter.

59.What else did the student learn that day ?

A.People from all walks of life should do their jobs with wisdom and love.

B.Everyone should love his job and sleepwalk his way through life.

C.Students should not sleep in class and they should respect their teachers.

D.Life is too limited to make your work an expression of your love.

B

Why should ear, nose, tongue and eyes be called special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connections. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn’t it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a heavy meal, but the hearing pitch(强度)does change after that.

We usually owe it to our tongue that we have taste, but do you know that unless saliva(唾液)dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten. Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and mouth with a tissue paper and then taste something.

Woman are much better smellers than man. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly make out the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50,000 different scents, which are strongly tied to the memories.

Pupils(瞳孔) do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a very delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can enlarge their pupils, change the focus and make them see less clearly.

Each and every one of us has an individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell isn’t very noticeable yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can point out the smell of our significant friends and colleagues. This is guided, to a great degree, by genetics but it is also influenced by the environment, diet and so on. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.

60.What may happen after you have had a rich lunch?

A.Your eyes become weak and can’t see well.

B.You may feel fresher and more energetic.

C.Your hearing pitch may be decreased.

D.Your tongue may lose the function of taste.

61.We can infer from the underlined sentence that __________.

A.your tongue must be dried so as to taste something.

B.if your tongue is dried without any saliva on it, it will not work.

C.your tongue alone can recognize the taste of food eaten.

D.if your tongue is dried with a tissue paper, it may work as well as before.

62.What makes each person different from anyone else except for twins according to the passage?

A.The particular smell of a person.

B.The characteristics of a person.

C.The style of one’s behavior.

D.The ability to distinguish various scents.

63.Which of the following may be the best title of this passage?

A.The Sensitivity of Sensory Organs

B.The Functions and Connections of Sensory Organs

C.A Newborn’s Sensory Organs

D.Different Senses Between Men and Woman

C

Mom was right! If you say thank you, for even the smallest gift or slightest show of kindness, you’ll fell happy.

Gratitude(感谢), says Robert A. Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, is an extremely important element of happiness, In his most recent book, Thanks! (Houghton Mifflin, $30.95), Emmons uses the first major study on gratitude to prove mom’s point. In acknowledging and promoting this much-ignored expression of thankfulness, he explains how people have benefited —even improved their health.

As one of the leading scholars of the positive psychology movement, he admits gratitude may be difficult to express. He recommends you begin by acknowledging that life is good and full of events and elements that make daily existence a wonder.

Second, recognize that the source of life’s goodness is more than just you. That source may be your mom, a friend, partner, child, colleague at work or play, a caregiver or God —or any combination of these.

Expressing gratitude should not be a reaction. Instead, it should be a state of mind, To feel grateful when life is a breeze and you have more than what you need is easy, To be grateful in times of crisis —anger, hatred and bitterness—is easier. Also, too many people are aware of life’s blessings only after these are lost.

It’s crisis and chaos—danger, disease, disability and death — that bring many individuals to realize just how dependent they are on others. Yet it’s the way each of us begins life and ends it. It’s too hard that so many people waste those decades in between laboring under the illusion(幻觉) that they are self-sufficient, says Emmons.

I’m not a reader or advocate of self-help books, but I am thankful for the reference I found in a newspaper article to the research Emmons was conducting on gratitude involving organ donors and recipients(接受者). The chance discovery led me to this book.

Mom implied that kindness seems to find its way back to the giver because life really is all about giving, receiving and repaying. So I’ll follow her advice and say: Thank you, Professor Emmons.

64.What is mainly discussed in the text?

A.Being thankful will keep you fit.

B.Mom is great for her being thankful.

C.There are many ways of being thankful.

D.Gratitude is of vital importance to happiness.

65.

A.you live a comfortable life

B.you receive gifts on your birthdagkstkou get help during your hard times

D.you are congratulated on your success

66..

A.it is easy to express your gratitude

Shree Bose is one of the most impressive kids graduating from Fort Worth Country Day High School this year. Bose has a large circle of friends, and there’s one who you may have heard of: President Obama. He has twice publicly recognized her achievements in cancer research and spoken with her in the Oval Office.

If that isn’t enough, Bose recently gave a TED Talk about her work with the cancer drug Cisplatin, which also won her first prize at the Google Science Fair and recognition as one of Glamour magazine’s Young Amazing Women of the Year.

After watching her grandfather struggle with liver cancer, Bose was determined to help out in any way she could. As a high school student though, her scientific choices were limited. She reached out to various hospitals and research centers, but doctors turned down her requests because they felt she was too inexperienced medically.

Only the North Texas Science Health Center respected her determination and chose to guide her. The results were amazing.

Bose chose to study a protein (蛋白质) and its reaction with the cancer drug Cisplatin. She noticed that when she prevented this protein from growing, Cisplatin was allowed to begin destroying cancer cells once again.

―My project not only contributes to the understanding of the relationship between the protein and Cisplatin, but also suggests a newer, more effective treatment for patients who resist Cisplatin,‖ Bose said.

Bose’s achievements aren’t limited to the lab, though. She was also captain of her swim team and editor-in-chief of her school paper.

Bose is currently getting practical experience at the National Institute of Health and she’ll be attending Harvard in the fall. She plans to study molecular biology and go to medical school. Eventually, she would like to be a doctor.

A surprising new research suggests it can actually be good to feel bad at work, and that feeling good in the workplace can lead to negative outes.

The study of emotions in the workplace, edited by University of Liverpool researchers Dr. Lindebaum and Peter Jordan, is the topic of a Special Issue of the journal ‘Human Relations’. They found that the monly-held belief that being positive in the workplace produces positive outes, while negative emotions lead to negative outes, may be in need for reconsideration. This is partly due to this belief failing to take into account the differences in working environment which affect outes.

For instance, anger does not always lead to negative outes and in some cases, anger can be considered a force for good through acting upon injustices. An employee, for example, could express anger constructively after a manager has treated a fellow worker unfairly. In such cases, performance and productivity, can lead to self-satisfaction and being too shallow in one’s personality.

One article within the issue also finds that, within team work situation, negativity can have a good effect, leading to fewer consensuses (共识) but a further discussion or debate on an important issue among workers, which enhances team effectiveness.

Lindebaum said, ―The findings of the study published in this Special Issue challenge the monly-held belief that in the workplace positive emotions bring about a positive oute, and vice versa.‖

He added, ―This Special Issue adds to our knowledge and understanding of how the positive and negative dynamics (动态) affect the working environment and is certain to have practical application in the workplace for the years to e.‖

25. Why did researchers of the study of emotions find that the monly-held belief needs to be
